real moms: a series

August 19, 2013

one // Any and everything by the food manufacturer Annie’s. Whether it’s legit or not (ha), I love that you can get fruit snacks, cheddar bunnies, cookies, trail mix, snack mix, the list goes on and on, while feeling like you’re being somewhat healthy. Maybe I’m a sucker for the word organic, BUT, they’re all easy things to throw in a bag when you’re running out the door, and know you’ll need some “nacks”.

two // Munchkin Click Lock 9-oz cups. No joke, they’re some of the cheapest cups I buy for Georgie, you can get them at the grocery store and they’re the ONLY ones I’ve found that truly don’t leak (I mean, unless they’re upside down). Not to mention, they have Dora specific ones, so G just hearts them.

three // Our $20 garage sale wagon. Georgie is kind of over the stroller right now, so the wagon is the PERFECT vehicle to either just take her on a walk around the block, or for places like the arboretum or zoo. It totes her around, AND all of our stuff, which is great (maybe not so great for David, he’s typically the one dragging it around).

four // Old Navy clothes. I just don’t feel like there’s anything out there that’s as cute, for a similar (and relatively low) price. You place an order online and have it in two-three days. It’s the bomb.

five // For moms? I don’t know.....wine? Ha. Honestly though, Amazon. For anything and everything. Whether you sign up for Amazon Mom, and have diapers shipped to your house on a monthly basis (and thus never have to worry about running out, everyone knows that is THE pits, realizing you have no more diapers in a time of need), or just need a pair of shoes (for you or your munchkin). It’s incredibly user friendly, you can find anything and typically for a lower price than you can elsewhere, and then it shows up at your front door. What could be better than that?

real moms: a series

August 15, 2013

sloan is one of those people who you just love to be around. she + my sister grew up together (+ remain close friends), which means that she + i grew up together for the most part. she + allison are the same age + i am sandwiched in between her sisters, kate + cece.
growing up the looney girls have always been very stylish + the most beautiful girls in a bunch. so it is really no wonder that little miss georgie is the cutest little girl in lakewood. brian + i recently told sloan that we are only okay with georgie being our daughter-in-law, partly because she is adorable + partly bc i like her parents so much. let the playdates + romance begin!

[if you are new to this series you can check out our first + second installments of real moms: a series]

name(s) + age of kid(s):
Georgie Maverick Dix, 20 months

city:
Dallas, TX

where are some of your favorite places to go with your little one?
We love Klyde Warren park, Georgie can't get enough of the different water/splash areas there. We also LOVE the zoo. Her "lovie" (security blanket) is a giraffe and so we go and feed the actual giraffes at the Dallas zoo and she just says over and over: "Hi wuuuvvviiee". We can't get enough (and continue to pay a ridiculous amount of money for two pieces of lettuce, they're banking on the Dix family).

what is something inspiring or funny that your mother taught you about being a mother?
Be creative. I remember so many fun things my mom used to do for us. We would "hunt for treasures", which I now understand to mean look for broken pieces of old tile in the alley. She also always came up with awesome things to do inside, like turn the piano into a "fort" by hanging a blanket over it. I think now, with iPads and computers and phones and TVs it's so easy to lose that sense of creativity and I just hope that as Georgie gets older, David and I can think of all sorts of things for her to do that don't involve "screens" all of the time. As far as funny goes, lets just say burping and tooting were always laughed at when we were growing up. And while bodily functions as such are pretty funny, I think what it actually taught us was to not be embarrassed or ashamed about certain things that sometimes can't be helped. My mom definitely always pushed us to just be who we were, and not ashamed of that and I think that't really important.

what is something you hope your child gets from you?
From me I hope she gets my tenacity and persistence. From David I hope she gets his laid back mentality and his ability to see the good in anybody.

what is something you hope they don't get from you?
Ha, well, if we’re being honest, I hope she doesn’t develop my propensity for anger. I can get worked up very easily and if we’re lucky, she’ll grow to be more even keeled and patient, like David.

how do you stay creative at home?
Right now it’s a lot of outdoor activities, she loves her wagon, or going on walks. She also just loves to do whatever it is I’m doing, so in the mornings when I get ready for work, I keep her entertained by letting her “do” all of the things I do, such as pretending to put deodorant on her, rollers in her hair, maybe a dab of lip gloss. She thinks it’s hysterical.

what is the number one thing you hope to teach your child?
That we are ALL people. No matter what your circumstances are, no matter how you were raised, no matter where you grew up, no matter who you love, we are all people with the same emotions and feelings, and thus should all be treated as such. I so hope by the time she grows up there is a SIGNIFICANT difference in the way we view race, sexuality or any other “differentiator” that seems to be prevalent in life right now. I know that we’ve come a very long way since the time of our own parents, but I just want Georgie to love everyone, to see each person as just that, an individual that deserves equality. Hopefully David and I can instill that understanding in her.

how do you relax after a stressful day?
If we’re at home, I cannot tell a lie, David and I love the good ole TV. We have our favorite shows like Grimm (I know, embarrassing) or Homeland. It’s nice to sit down and just be able to let your mind go, not have to think. We also read a lot, whether it be our marriage books or parenting books or just straight up trashy reads, we’re pretty into our kindle and iPad. If we have the option of going out, ideally it would be a dinner and movie, but sometimes we cut it short to just a fun dinner.

please share a story with us about your little one:
Oh man, where to begin. I just love how she’s started to pick up on the phrases and words that go together. We’ve recently started letting her watch Dora. I’m not even sure where or how the obsession began, I think because someone gave us a little Dora kitchen that’s in her room. BUT, the other day David and I were repeating something that they say on the show (Swiper No Swiping....I’m sure a lot of parents know exactly what I’m talking about) and out of nowhere, Georgie responded as Swiper would and threw her hands in the air and said: “Ohhhhhhhhh Man”. David and I both died laughing. It’s so funny to hear such a little human start to put it all together, say words, and just her little voice going “ohhhh man”....well, it just melts my heart like nothing else.

thank you so much for giving us a peek into your life with georgie on the little things blog. you are an amazing mother to sweet georgie, she is so lucky to have you + david as parents.

i look forward to sharing your favorite things with everyone next week.

real moms: a series

July 22, 2013

here is ashley's list of must haves for mommyhood:

Coconut Oil – I use it on Brit after every bath. It is the best natural moisturizer you can use. I use it too!

Tiny Toms – Brit has 5 pairs! I think these are the best shoes for little boys. He can even get them on and off himself. They come in tons of colors and prints and are super adorable on.

Sugar Free Popsicles – That boy could live off of these, even in the winter!

Jergens Natural Glow Healthy Complexion DailyFacial & Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer – I love this stuff! It moisturizes my skin and gives me a sun kissed glow, if you are consistent with it.

Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case foriPad – I received this as a gift when Brit was a bit younger and it has been amazing and held up well. It’s a great iPad protector, so that I don’t have to worry about it getting damaged if he accidently drops it when he’s playing on it.

real moms: a series

July 15, 2013

it only seemed approipriate to feature ashley after laura in this series. laura introduced me to ashley a few years ago, but it wasn't until recently that we became friends. she is a new friend + i couldn't be more pleased to have her + brit in our life.
ashley is a fashionable, hard working, sweet, single mama to briton. i truly look up to her ability to balance it all so flawlessly. she has a level head on her shoulders + has always been so sweet  to everyone around her.

[check out my first installment of Real Moms: A Series to get a background of what we are doing here]

name(s) + age of kid(s):
Briton (Brit) + 3 years old

city:
Arlington, Tx

where are some of your favorite places to go with you little one?
The park hands down is our favorite place. Brit loves playing on the playground and watching all the other kids; and it't free! It's our Saturday morning routine. We go first thing in the morning and always stop on our way home for a Rainbow Popsicle; it's our little weekend ritual. We recently discovered a park that has a covered playground and a splash park. Best place ever for the summertime!

what is something inspiring or funny that your mother taught you about being a mother?
To relax and let him get dirty! I love styling and dressing him up in cool outfits. I have so much fun with it! When he started to become more active I would fret if he got a little speck of dirt on his shirt. She has really taught me to relax about that part, and I just need to let him have fun. Clothes can be washed, and if not, who cares!

what is something you hope your child gets from you?
I was always taught to be polite, to always say "please", "thank you" and "excuse me". I can already see that in Brit now. People tell me all the time how polite he is, and I take pride in that. I think he really get it, and he says those words so cute!

what is something you hope they don't get from you?
My stubbornness. When that boy sets his mind to something that is it! I'm very much the same way. Growing up my parents use to call them "projects". For example, if there was a toy I wanted, I would talk and talk about it until I talked my way into getting it, or got in trouble for talking abou it! I can see that in Brit. If he wants to go to the park or if he wants a new train, he will try very hard to get his way.

how do you stay creative at home?
I work full time, so I find inspiration every day when I'm out and about, whether it's from a photo shoot or something I see driving to work. I think creativity is all around us in our everyday life; including work and parenting. However, I do find easy inspirations like many of us do nowadays on PINTEREST! It's such a great, easy way to find new ideas from fashion to home decor to activities to do with your kiddos.

what is the number one thing you hope to teach your child?
I hope to teach Brit honesty. Not just to others, but to himself as well. I think when you're honest, you will have peace of mind. And in order for him to have that is for me to model it best for him. Not just with my words, but with my lifestyle as well.

how do you relax after a stressful day?
I love to put on some comfy clothes, slip into my bed and watch a good show. I'm a sucker for reality TV, I feel like I record them all!

please share a story with us about your little one:
Ever since Easter Brit has been obsessed with it! He has played with plastic eggs every day since then, I’m not kidding. His Easter basket and eggs are everyday toys for him. He loves to put random little things in the eggs and pile them all in his basket, and then turn around and take each one out at a time and open them… His reaction to each one is as if he had no idea what was already in there! He’s so cute and funny about it.
He’s also pretty skilled on his iPad and likes to open up YouTube and will request me to literally search “Easter Eggs” and then he will sit watch all these random videos about Easter eggs. He’s literally obsessed with Easter; it's very funny and very random!

ashley, thank you so much for giving us a peek into your life as a mommy to sweet brit. we love having you two in our lives. you are an amazing mom, person + friend. thank you again. xx

Real Moms: A Series

June 24, 2013

i really hope that everyone enjoyed the first installment of "Real Moms: A Series" with my dear friend laura.  today i am sharing the second part of what i asked these moms to do for this series. i am asking each mom to share five products (could be toys, technology, safety products, equipment. etc.)  they couldn't do without as moms.

i just love him so much...how adorable is beni?

here are laura + beni's favorites:

clockwise from the far left: one // Organic Veggie Pouches: They are stage two baby food, but they are perfect for on-the-go and healthy! Beni loves them. two // Cutter All Family Mosquito Wipes: West Nile is no joke here in Texas and the spray stuff is too much for little ones. three // Destin Extra Strength: With all of the new foods that Beni is being introduced to, diaper rash is common. This stuff takes care of that! four // Pandora: It saves me from having to use my precious iPod memory on kids tunes. I crank it up in car rides when Beni gets a little restless. five // North States Superyard Baby Gates: Keeps Beni away from the chimney and entertainment center.

this big smile gets me every time

thank you again laura for being the little things first "Real Mom" in our new series. i am so happy to have you as a wonderful mommy friend to share new products with, have playdates together, + vent  to when i'm having a stressful day.
i love that we are able to be a part of each other's families + not just watch, but help each other's kids grow up.
we love you yaya!
